Who JawAtlas is for

For

For researchers

A viewer you can drop an anonymised dataset into and trust what it shows, on a device that never talks to a server.

Measurements use the pixel and slice spacing from the headers.

Import that handles real data

Series are grouped on study and series UIDs plus rows, columns and quantised orientation, so files with per-slice orientation differences do not get assembled into a geometrically invalid volume. Slices are sorted along the slice normal, gaps are detected, and duplicates are caught. Supported syntaxes include RLE Lossless and JPEG Lossless; lossy files are rejected per file. Multi-frame files, MONOCHROME1 inversion and missing rescale tags are handled. DICOM in plain words.

Geometry you can check

Orientation labels are derived from the ImageOrientationPatient cosines. The patient-space transform was validated against the 3D Slicer markup that ships with the demo dataset. Measurements are computed from pixel spacing and slice spacing; the scale ruler is drawn from the same values. What the measurements do and do not do.

No cloud contact

There is no networking code in the app, enforced by an audit script. Identifying tags are never stored. For datasets under a data use agreement, that is often the deciding property. Privacy design.

What it is not

JawAtlas is a viewer for education, not an analysis platform. There is no segmentation, no registration, no ROI statistics and no export to NIfTI. For those, see the comparison of viewers, where desktop tools such as 3D Slicer are the right choice.

Questions students ask

Which DICOM transfer syntaxes are supported?

Implicit and Explicit VR Little Endian, Deflated, RLE Lossless and JPEG Lossless (processes 14 and 70). Lossy JPEG, JPEG 2000 and JPEG-LS files are rejected per file with a clear message rather than failing the whole import.

How are slices ordered?

By projecting each slice's ImagePositionPatient onto the slice normal, not by instance number or file name, with gap detection and duplicate detection. A series needs at least four slices.

Can I export data from JawAtlas?

You can export a case for another JawAtlas user and a PDF summary of marked views. There is no NIfTI or CSV export today.

JawAtlas is an education and training aid. It is not a medical device and must not be used for diagnosis, treatment planning or any clinical decision.
